Illfonic were the Devs on F13, Gun Media were the publishers. They launched a Kickstarter for a game called Summer Camp Vol. 1
The company Horror Inc. which owned the rights to the Friday franchise (at the time), gave them permission to use the Friday property, there were strings attached though. They had to approve all material added to the game.
A year after launch they got warned the rights might be under dispute in the future. So they rushed the bots, challenges and a couple of characters out the door. Didn’t have time to finish Jason X or the Grendel map before receiving word from Horror inc., that they had to stop releasing content. Illfonic moved on shortly after, they handed off dev duties to a smaller company Black Tower Studios, to finish big fixes and optimizing the game. Without content to create them and a Gun Media split, it appears to have been amicable.
The lawsuit. After 30 years a creator can reclaim their work if it wasn’t done under a work for hire contract. Victor Miller the author of the original movie had filed to reclaim. Horror inc. disagreed and so they took him to court claiming it was a work for higher, they failed to convince a judge as Sean Cunningham (Owner of Horror inc.) couldn’t produce a contract.
The judge ruled in favour of Victor Miller, he was awarded the rights to the first Friday movie and all the character, but only in North America. Cunningham would continue to own the international rights to the first movie and all other rights associated with the franchise.
Cunningham wasn’t happy and appealed the ruling. We’re still waiting to find out exactly what the judge ruled or if there will be another appeal. I believe they are working out a deal but have no proof other than Friday licenses being sold again.
It is possible the Judge ordered Cunningham to pay Victor, to recombine the rights and allow them both to get what they want. Victor doesn’t care about adult Jason and based on how little Cunningham paid him in royalties over the years, I pretty sure he’d part with the rights for his fair share of the millions the franchise earned.
Wes, the CEO of Gun Media has said he won’t work with Cunningham again, so there’s pretty much a zero chance of that game coming back from the dead.
Edit - Sorry, for the history lesson. I’m maybe a bit to passionate about that game.
On topic, I can’t wait to see what Predator Single Player Challenges look like. Want to hunt me a mutant alien T-Rex, and be seen screaming my lungs out, holding it’s skull 2 handed over my head.
I would like a bots mode, I suck as Predator and need more practice than I can get in live matches.
