Crossplay Paid Tournament

Why wouldn’t it be?

Just actually looking into this and it does look like California may give you some issues with their laws on sweepstakes and contests.

There’s also something said about having the tourny run through a tourny ladder and not have matches based on luck or hat draw (Which I’m fairly certain is happening already)

And there’s also something said about it potentially being against the games TOS. So you may want to double check the TOS to see if paid tournye are permitted, or check with @OldKingHamlet and @Courier themselves.

Be a shame to have this get run down cos of laws, haha

Here’s a post regarding setting up a paid game tourny:

"You should get a lawyer to help you with this. California has strict rules about running any contest, which are in the California Business and Professions Code sections 17539-17539.3, 17539.35. However, those Contest rules do not apply if the people will be in person competing with their skills. So first you need to determine if this is an in-person contest or not. You will also need to check the licensing on the game you plan to use. You will probably need to get permission from the game company, since you would be using the name and photos from the game. The game company may not want to be affiliated with your contest and may not allow you to use their game for your money-making contest. You may be violating the game company’s copyright as well as its right of publicity. "

Another thing coming to mind as well with this, international laws.

People are gonna be participating from around the world I would assume, so there may be different laws regarding paid contests for each county which would probably have to be obided by.

Thank you for the advice, but based on one of the responses then answer would be yes since it is based on skill it is not by any means gambling, luck or lottery. Ill take the rest of this week to talk to a lawyer consultant of mine. We are by no means claiming this is official or sanctioned.

Of course, it would just be pretty shit if this whole tourny turned out to be illegal due to state laws and such. Good to see legality is being taken seriously ^-^ Hadn’t come to mind until @VENN7eance had brought it up

Yea the only concern I would have in that sense is if illfonic is cool with it but tbh i think they wouldn’t mind some free publicity, but ill double check all that stuff this next week or so.

hadn’t figured that it would be illegal because of the fact that it IS skill based lol

Haha, yeah, it wasn’t he skill based stuff that really got me iffy, it was the TOS and checking with the company that was the biggun, and state laws and such. But the skill based part seemed fine to me, haha

Appreciate you looking out

No problem, was actually interesting to look at different issues that may occur surrounding this.

Law is fun but no fucking way am I learning that shit and becomming a lawyer, too much effort, lol

I just read a few different articles and the laws in California regarding this situation is quite simple and easy to understand. So simple in fact that all of our posts actually cover most of the requirements. The only issue we would come across is if we tried to use the games name in any promotional stuff we do without illfonics consent.

Common sense wins once again!

Anybody saying that PC does not have a advantage over console players in this game is talking nonsense in my book. Yes, you can be sure that if the PS players win is because they had better skill. I don’t even need to wait for the end of the tournament, I can make this claim right now.

@Rubyr8 that just means you’re not good with MK.

Yes i bad mk
