ILLFONIC DEVELOPER UPDATE

game is simple as fuck, a tutorial for this game is not even needed. The only reason why so many people struggle with this game is because they have never played video games in their lives.

And I’m not talking about being an ACE player that doesn’t miss a shot, but basic stuff like movement, completing objectives by following a waypoint marker, FOLLOWING BUTTON PROMPTS ON YOUR FUCKING SCREEN… You have to be a special kind of moron to not be able to pick up on simple shit like that

on the contrary! its a way of (minimally) keeping the game alive. potatos play the tutorial, think they’re big stuff, and que for a public match as predator, ignorant of their unavoidable fate. they lose, then go “hm, might as well give fireteam a try.” most of them will come to realize how broken fireteam is and stick with it because they think its funny until they’re a hefty level 100-150, and then they decide to revisit predator because they have usable weapons now. hence: the process.

I can say that i was a victim of this exact cycle back in the old days. everyone here remembers their first match as pred. screaming at their screen as they arm the self-destruct sequence, wondering how in the hell they didn’t slaughter the whole fireteam with only wrist blades and plasma

and yet queue times tell a different story.

In order for queue times to be optimal, you need 4 players choosing FT for every player choosing Predator. Queue times for pred indicate, and this has been like this since day one, that no matter how much “nerf Pred, buff FT” more than half the playerbase still choose to play Pred, which is detrimental to the game because it makes queueing up as pred boring as fuck.

Players continue to play pred after being stomped on because they are just in it to roleplay and are not interested in winning or doing good

you may have a point, considering how many times I play against the same people/squad in just an hour. the hype of this game (or what remains of it) advertised to new players is playing as predator in the highest graphics option since like AVP 2010. people hold on to trailer footage too much. too many pred “mains” are out there to roleplay, and 8/10 times they end up self destructing and wasting a que spot that elite players could have had.

it doesn’t take long to reach level 100 anymore, hence the rapid shift to people revisiting and sticking with predator. the fireteams we play today are either in the level <100 range (with the exception of the few people who stick to maining fireteam) or death squads who have been around since day one and only know how to play fireteam. then there’s the people who only play fireteam to abuse exploits and annoy other people, but that’s a different story.

I would turn over in my grave had I been dead right now lmao

I’ve always blamed the tutorial. I like how other modern PVP/E’s demand you get a proper feel of the game through a more refined training mission or scenario, before you’re even allowed to access multiplayer mode.

holy dookie butt, I had an aneurysm watching that video (in the funny way)

you should have died/been second winded SO MANY times. thankfully, the fireteam appeared to have brain farts at crucial moments that could have won them the game, especially the part where you were climbing around a tree, uncloaked, with quite literally zero health visible on your health bar. even though you did cloak eventually, the mask laser is still such a dead giveaway in night mode. you got away with so much during that engagement.

I still squirm every time you slam, because it just leaves you so vulnerable every time, even with a tankier class like wolf. SUPER dangerous when we’ve already seen a dutch 87 swinging his knife around. thankfully, most dutch knife swingers lack brain cells so you did manage to get away with it.

I know I’m a hypocrite for saying this because I still do it for shits and giggles, but NEVER MELEE A DUTCH 87!!! (if you can help it)

Two words: Risk assessment.

Since I’m aware of what I’m dealing with in most matches within the first engagement, or just know a particular player’s skill set, I usually know when I can and cannot afford to take risks. There are times I still play super-safe throughout a tough match against good premades and still lose, bc I’m just simply outmatched by far better players, but every team combination is different.

I know the hardcore players aren’t relatable to the rest of the other audience but what was left in the wake of “balance” is deplorable even by other games standards

I want to say it even creates a very unrealistic type of player to even play predator wether it be masochism or what have you

honestly I think they made the tutorial like it is for a reason. you slaughter the ai without any effort, making you feel invincible. but then your first real match is a bitch-slap wake up call telling you that you’re not, in fact, invincible. quite the contrary, to be honest.

if I had to tweak the tutorial, I’d give the HVT target fireteam-level damage output. maybe add a fireteam bot or two wandering the map as well so that noobs have some sort of knowledge regarding the threat they’re up against in pubs.

when first equipping your plasma caster, add a pop-up explaining that the caster can be charged and how all that works.

kill everyone in the first camp, continue up to the point where the player eliminates two thirds of the enemy forces in the final big camp.

then, add a cutscene where the predator gets lit up and is forced to retreat, explaining how to use the heal kit and how second wind works. maybe telling the player that pigs exist and can be eaten.

give at least a pop-up somewhere explaining that your biomask can be destroyed.

another cutscene depicting a different predator failing in their hunt, being downed, and showing how to activate self destruct.

after the detonation, fade back to the present hunt. the npc’s have called in reinforcements, and the player is given a final test to eliminate 2 fireteam bots + the original HVT.

New ways for FT to traverse the jungle can mean one of two things

  1. They will be able to leap like the Predator thanks to STGZ reverse engineering

  2. New bigger maps w/ vehicles

Test servers are cool I guess

FT balance is much needed

Will it be enough to regain my interest? Not likely.

i still play this game for shits and giggles.
What kind of new traverse is needed?

Bionic legs to super jump. tats a little too much.
Dune buggies aren’t necessary but they might be a cool addition if you’re vulnerable while on it but that means you get to objectives faster which isn’t really necessary.
Jet packs would be breaking emersion. There is nothing like that about the story that needs jet packs.
Grapple hook stolen from the Predator Oni or something like it (batman grapple hook or something)…i can see that. If the range is limited and restricted to trees and cliff ledges.

my last guess is that there might be a new improved “traversal” mechanic which will replace run (maybe accompanying run) and basically you could climb up ledges, volley over boulders easily, or even climb down long cliff edges like with a grappling rope and repel down. That would be dope! These would require new traversal animations much like Tomb Raider does.

its just a way to test out your controller/key mapping. Its not meant for much else. Quite literally they probably had to create a test map well before development and the “tutorial” was probably it.

Yeah, they gotta add simple DLCs such as movie weapons and none of that plasma/star wars bullshit. Ft needs decent content such as weapon packs.
