well… they had ranking systems, items and things etc, so they kinda had things to fight for and get intense over.

People have been tbagging and talking trash since multiplayer games have existed.
Without it you may as well be facing blizzard bots and a playerbase that only gets to interact through 4 quick chat messages because that’s whats at the end of the “defeat toxicity” tunnel. People with that censorship mindset ban for posting GGEZ.
Blizzard ruined their e-sports scene by removing all forms of competitive trashtalk too. It was at its height of popularity when Idra went up on stage and called everyone else trash. Now you’re just watching your favorite bots play eachother and shake hands.
