Epipens contain 2 ml Epinephrine and some other components such as sodium chloride, sodium metabisulfate, hydrochloric acid, and water.

Epinephrine is what we will focus on, as it is the active ingredient here. Epinephrine, or more commonly referred to as adrenaline, is a neurotransmitter and hormone that acts on alpha-1 receptors. It increases smooth muscle contraction, as well as increase intestinal sphincter contraction. It also increases heart rate, cardiac muscle contraction strength, blood pressure, displayed the bronchioles and many other side effects that are associated with the fight or flight response. Ingestion is not the fastest or most efficient way to get epinephrine into the blood stream, right now a sublingual (below the tongue) epinephrine patch is in testing, and has shown preliminary to be faster than epipen injections, reaching median max concentration in only 8-12 minutes versus epipen’s 22.5. As someone with lethal food allergies this research is very promising for a both significantly more compact and faster life saving reaction, compared to a standard epipen injection device, which are bulky and relative slow to diffuse as it is injected intramuscularly.

Well, that actually is a real thing for children or those with a phobia of needles/injections who have lethal allergies. By having it be as sublingual patch, those individuals will be more likely to use it when it is needed instead of having to work up the courage to use a needle, and with an anaphylactic reaction time is everything for survival and favorable outcomes.

I use epinephrine on a nebulizer to treat asthma. That shit is way fucking better than albuterol. I used to shot albuterol 2-3 times a day and ever since I changed to Asthmanefrin I only dose like once a week.

Interesting, I used to use albuterol back when I had really severe asthma that used to almost kill me as a kid.

I outgrew it when I hit my late teens, but Doc said severe asthma will return when I’m in my 30s-40s, so I’ll probably look into it then. Right now I only have asthma when my allergies are triggered, so taking an antihistamine is all I need to avoid it.
