Games have gone from just campaigns, to campaigns with tacked on multiplayer in the 2000s, then to multiplayer with tacked on campaigns around 2010, then just $40 online-only games.
Lower production values, low-faith projects trying to copy popular products, and bigger companies trying to imitate indie games/early access titles I think.
For Aliens: Fireteam though everyone expected this to be an MMO but they went radio silent while in development hell until a couple months before launch with their marketing plan being to call themselves a left4dead clone lol.
