if i have it on as a ps4 player does that mean ill get less players who dont have it on ?

No. Apparently, each match is evaluated independently. So console players can play a mixed match of players that have have it both on and off, but only players that have it on will ever be placed in lobbies with PC players.

thanks i was half hoping all the potatoes would turn it off and id get paired only with people who had it on

Why did they waste time and money on crossplay when they could have just made the game better for the existing playerbase

Bigger potential playerbase.
Kind of negated by the fact majority will disable it.

Though I think crossplay for console shooters is silly in general unless the aim assist is strong enough to put sticks at the level of a mouse. And only a couple games do that, Warzone and Halo.
