Heartbeat is used by server and game to verify they can see each other. They send packets back and forth every few seconds. Without heartbeat server can’t tell if your game is OK or your console/PC crashed or your internet connectivity is down. Same is true for other way around, your game needs to know if the server is still alive.
If your game shows Heartbeat failure, it may be crashed server, issue with connectivity between Amazon and your ISP. It may be your ISP trouble with overloaded routers which clean NAT connection tracking tables too often. It also may be caused by your firewall because it incorrectly drop heartbeat packets because it thinks they are some malicious traffic. Of course it may be another weird bug in game.
