I have a 1080P 48" commercial display. Is basically a 48" monitor display, not a TV display. I also have a 4K TV in the living room. Try to guess which one looks 100 times better? Even with 4K content, the 1080P looks sharper and crispier compared to the TV.

Sounds like a good deal. But if I canāt play games because of screen-tearing I donāt want to invest in a new TV. G-synch , or as you mentioned Free-sync , still seem the way to go. But damn it would be cool to have a OLED TV as a monitor. This particular TV also has a 120 hz refresh rateā¦ will that negate the need for Gsync or Freesync?
No. GSync/Freesync is a technology that will alter the refresh rate of your monitor to that of the game. So if your game drops to say, 40,60,90, 110 frames so will the monitor. This is what makes it much more smoother and allows you to have a better response on games.
On a TV you will get that 120Hz refresh rate regardless.
Now. No HDMI supports 4K@120Hz. So unless the TV has DisplayPort inputs the GPU will not recognize the 120Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate of the display will simply duplicate frames to fill up missing frames from your GPU.
Most pro gamers and reviewers agree that 1440P@144Hz looks better than 4K@60Hz on the same display size.
Tvs are 60hz. The 120hz advertising is almost always BS and they insert BFIs to bump the number up or call it something made up like an āeffective/simulatedā refresh rate. And this is allowed because idk.
Crappy interpolation techniques since nobody using tvs has any 120fps content anyways.
The 120Hz is the refresh rate of the display. I dunno if is really native 120Hz or simulated (like a 720P accepting 1080P signals but the panel itself is 720P). What I do know is that HDMI does not support 120Hz refresh rate on 4K signals.
