I’ve concluded this all boils down to a disagreement in definitions. For centuries it has been universally understood that there are 2 sexes in humans (intersex is a medical condition and not a separate sex) and they are easily distinguishable - those born with a penis (Male), and those born with a vagina (Female).
Now a new generation has come along who for whatever reason (I suspect because there’s not much else left to rebel against as we all pretty much acknowledge racism and discrimination against gay people is wrong) want to throw away these distinctions and create a muddled, somewhat regressive labelling system full of contradictions and nonsense.
I prefer to stick to the biological reality definitions rather than the fuzzy abstract ones. If Ellen Page wants to change her name and wear clothes associated with stereotypical depictions of masculinity then good for her, but she doesn’t get to (in the terminology of this new age) ‘co-opt the lived experience of men and gender appropriate their identity’ anymore than I could suddenly claim to be Asian.
I guess the simple questions to ask those that buy into the new orthodoxy is:
‘What is a Man?’ and ‘What is a Woman?’
If their answer is some woolly variation of ‘someone who feels they are a man/woman’ then you know you’re not dealing with a serious person.
All that said, I can’t wait for Transracialism to become the new frontier. The biological differences between race are minuscule in comparison to the differences between sex, so there’s no reason it shouldn’t be accepted by the same people who enthusiastically proclaim their pronouns at every available opportunity.

The word trans isn’t particularly new, generation definitely has nothing to do with it. Different cultures have had their own terms for trans people through out history.
People don’t particularly need a reason to rebel… the claim that everyone believes something is to general to be of use. Still along way to go on those fronts but glad your little part of the world is free from it.
Seems more regressive to not acknowledge the diversity that exists within people.

He isn’t co-opting though, he’s merely using language to express his own. Trans men and Trans women are only living their own experience, it doesn’t degrade yours.
Depends on the context but terms used to convey information about a person is probably the simplest.
You’re drawing a conclusion without proving it. It might be the opposite and they are in fact taking things more seriously than you. Your dismissal could even be used to show how you aren’t to be taken seriously at least in concern to how others feel about themselves.

I’m sure many cultures were aware and accepting of those who didn’t conform to stereotypical gender roles. I doubt however they literally believed the terms ‘man/woman’ were essentially meaningless due to them not accepting a biological difference.
I fully acknowledge that people are diverse. The point I was making was related to young girls now being told that if they don’t happen to like ‘pink, pretty things and wearing dresses’ this must mean they’re actually male, rather than, you know, just letting men and women like whatever and dress however they want.

So if I used language to describe myself as black and request people refer to me and acknowledge me as a black man that would be perfectly valid and not degrade the experience of actual black people?
See, this is just vague nonsense. Imagine a hospital receiving an unconscious patient, and nurses being asked to convey critical information to a doctor over the phone. Do you think they’d say they were unable to identify whether the person was male or female as they couldn’t get clarification from the patient themselves yet?

I’ve never made an argument based on gender roles or preferences. Those people aren’t doing anyone a favour by assuming things. So this isn’t really relevant to how I see things.
It’s a false equivalency. I think if people were bigoted toward you that would matter though, how you define yourself is irrelevant.

This is a valid concern for Trans people it is also an argument for recognizing Trans people. Medical records need a way to identify individuals personal medical needs. So a nurse can communicate information quickly and efficiently.
