Whats happening party people!?
Alot of things are happening in film these days that are simply not necessary, but are they?
DC Universe:
a new Superman rebooted too soon by a guy who looks like the man version of Ellen Degenerous who takes selfies with celebrities much like she does. Its the same asexual sass. If you’re confused I’m talking about the Director.
No matter what you say, the fact that Dinsy…sorry Warner has gotten the jitters and hired James Gunn as their CEO for DC Entertainment company. This is NOT a power move. Its an ass grab to every man, women and child and pet dog/cat with no recourse.
Its not a genius working. Its no Chris Nolan. Its a clown with a big wallet who happens to look like a bearded Ellan Degenerate.
CEOs in the world:
are getting a failure card and people should be ready to be let down simply because they aren’t catering to the REAL fans but the vast market. CEOs are being targeted. I see it all the time, in Insurance (people getting murdered) or in the leadership of countries. Let’s face it, TAXES are a big part of the game. When product sells and becomes super popular, the governments take a shitton in tax collection. Are they ready for the responsibility? HELL NO. Half of the European world and most of the middle east don’t know how to settle a dispute if their own homeland was being dragged into hell.
Whats happening with the predator franchise is probably not by chance but people seeing an underdog director take home 3 films worth of pay duty for someone who literally has 2 priors under his belt is down right a slap in the face to any seasoned director.
Superman looks like a reboot that simply is not needed but opts to use the opportunity to cash in on lower margins forseen by using demographic widening. Its called “SELLING OUT”. Same happened when they actually included a dog in their universe during the 60s or 70s when productions had to be really cheap to survive. Newsprint was all the rage and there was nobody going to the theatres because it was sloppy. Remember the Adam West Batman? Same shit. Different story. Same company.
FACT:
If you liked that tv show of that newer modern take on the film called The Day of the Jackal and happened to try to get through any part of the original The Day of the Jackal film produced in the 60s, it was really hard. REALLY HARD! I’m not saying the new one is bad infact I’m saying that they are YARDS apart! The new one is VERY VERY GOOD! The political drama from the old version was like a smidge of what modern problems are. Were Brits really worried about the topic? I don’t think so. But that wasn’t the real problem…it was the AUDIO!
The audio technology was the biggest problem! The film sounded like GARBAGE! Like someone put two tin cans tied by a copper wire and thought that was good enough. Meanwhile, The Beatles and Pink Floyd were the only party around making natural sounding clean and dynamic audio that would set the standard for film and television before the digital era comes.
Maybe the original is considered a classic but it was brought down by the challenges of its times.
BACK TO TODAY:
The Investors:
Marvel films are tanking and relying on stock purchases for revenue. TOYS, BUBBLE GUM, CEREAL BOXES, LOTTERY TICKETS, OFFICE STATIONARY, RUBBER DUCKIES all tied to a multitude of investors from different industries willing to cash in/gamble on some of the fanfare.
If you’ve ever been in the theatres in the last 10 years, its Cineplex (the only theatre complexes in town) buying out the entire room of seats only to fill a fraction of them hoping they can get your money through concessions (food and other shit). This is how they report their earnings. They buy out the entire theatre for you, probably report that to the film companies as sold tickets but report losses in revenue. Think about why a films wiki reports so much box office earnings. They are. The Film company reports great numbers sold, but the CINEPLEXes are doing terrible like all the time. year over year. CINEPLEX promised live entertainment, comics sold at the venue and arcades gallore. Where is that? Not happening until they can get investors onboard with them.
Recenty Diamond Distributing called it quits. Its less than a few months before the end fo the year for companies to do something about it or announce something but I’m sure books are very low tier on the list of things to sell.
Much like they are onboard with the film companies. Let me know when new investors co-operate with Cineplex because these aren’t disappearing even though Covid fucked it up royally as well as lots of fire bombings terrorizing smaller theatres by…(well you might know if you followed the news on that).
The New Stuff:
Fantastic Four is just a tv show pilot with a little more money.
DC has bowed out for a while now, and their video games are pretty much unrelatable. Why would they release a game about villains (Suicide Squad) and think it would be a success when history tells us people don’t buy it even when they were on the shelves. But that’s just my perspective on North American values. Lets not get into a world who lives in the desert and who thinks buying a videocard means opening up the market in a Muslim society. Maybe they like Shark/ human heroes.
There is very little purpose in the entertainment industry right now as they are trying to scratch every itch in every corner of the universe including the moon.
Or are we dealing with a unique problem of age demographics who really can’t find joy in the older material and that we always need new things?
The younger Superman of Smallville will never return because the cast is too old and the sexuality is always there, but is it now a being a concern of new material favouring a ‘glad to be here’ mentality?
Maybe. Is it woke? Probably. Probably not that much. Is it political? Not really.
Maybe I should be less jaded:
There are however some candles left to burn. Alien Earth looks promising but at 8 episodes, it doesn’t look like investors see much in it to begin with or maybe the budget is too intense. Another tough sell is that they are thinking it might be too much like Raised by Wolves. A masterpiece it might be, but left to inspire at best. I’d be happy to hear that.
Additionally, some really odd ball franchises from less known empires producing material like Dune, TV shows like Man in the High Castle, to lesser known Sci-fi are making their debuts (in the last few years). SnowPiercer went through several iterations and would not be considered a massive commercial success but definitely a testament to modern storytelling. Much like the show THe PEripheral or Foundation. Its not even what one would consider to be StarWars paradises, they are just modern visions of old concepts that are universal.
Maybe that’s why PHG is still alive, because people like you and me like the ‘good ol days’.
Thank you for reading my shit.
