GODZILLA (and other kaiju)

Ya as another punching bag lol

Toho has declared that any subsequent appearances of the 1998 character will be under the name “Zilla,” because according to Shogo Tomiyama it "took the ‘God’ out of 'Godzilla.

Money talks. They’d do it. They’d let it happen.

That’s true 😎

This is an accurate quote but this is not true. I explained as such over in the figures thread.

Please copy and paste to keep me from searching in vain.

No, I’d put money on Toho letting 98 Godzilla return if their cut was big enough and the story good enough. Like alluded to long ago, a Godzilla-verse film or better yet films, featuring Showa, Heisei, 98, Millenium and Legendary G designs all thrown together against multiple versions of their most famous enemies, by the Xilians, having returned from a long trip between dimensions. That would be sick.

Ah yes, I recall now. Yeah, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t make an appearance on another movie(s).

He could, very well could, but they will likely disrespect him like they did FW. At least in the Rulers of Earth comics he put up a very good fight in every engagement.

That’s what I mean. If the right person got ahold of the story, handled each version with respect, it could be great.

Well Toho and Sony/Tristar had a deal for an American version for pretty much that entire decade, since 1992. They were all set to go in 1994, but Tristar refused to fork over the budget. So in 1996 after the success of Stargate and ID4, they tried to get Emmerich and Devil to work on it. Both of them poopoo’d the idea, they didn’t like Godzilla at all and didn’t want to touch it. After some financial encouragement, they agreed but only if they could do their own version. Both Toho and Sony, now at the risk of losing millions over a contract that produced nothing, were pretty much backed into a corner, so Toho said ok, fine. And the rest is history.

Hope it’s true. Hope they pay Wingard to do it, or at least Dougherty. Hope it takes place in broad daylight, or whatever light source is inside hollow earth. Hope to see more of those new titans. Hope they don’t fuck it up.

GvK Sequel? MV is as good as dead with how dogshit that movie was.

Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

Uhmmm…hate to disappoint but the movie wasn’t as bad as you make it out to be. Like, imo it was the weakest entry so far but it made HUGE money. The MV is actually going very, very strong strong right now in numerous markets, so its far from dead, mate.

I will gladly have a civil discussion as to how I believe the film is filled with character assassination, world building wastage, and crap writing, but from a narrative and quality perspective its probably three feet deep for me already. Maybe it’s the doomer AvP Fan in me but I see the writing on the wall.

I just hope Adam Wingard doesn’t touch this series again. Anyone of the previous directors would instantly make me more hopeful.

!

I had already accepted Toho was done sharing the license, but we’re still going. No complaints here.

Wingard’s the weakest of the 3 directors, really more of a thriller movie guy. Gareth has a great sense of scale but ik Dougherty wanted to do an ancient hollow earth movie with Godzilla in Atlantis and whatnot fighting aliens.

Oh, you aren’t wrong at all. What Dougherty set up in KOTM was brilliant, and while more fantastical than the “grounded in reality” feeling 14 and KSI brought, it wasn’t so incredibly farfetched. GvK took all the out-there concepts that made the Showa era bad (or good, if you’re a boomer) and just slapped a CGI budget on it. I will say GvK did a lot of great things, at least in terms of cinematics, scale, and personality development for the monsters. But the script, human narrative, and yes especially the world building, fell very flat.

Nah, Toho has expressed a lot of happiness with how the character has been portrayed so far. The deal they set up in 2012 expired, obviously, but the option to renew was there, and obviously discussions were happening. The Apple+ series and this new announcement confirms things have been renewed (plus all the MV merchandise like the new figures that are now coming out). But yes, definitely no complaints, I’m very happy to see it moving forward.

So many people were hating on Wingard when he was announced. Then the trailer FINALLY hit, and people kind of shut up about him lol. He has an eye for things, and certainly had some amazing shots in GvK, but yes he was the weakest, of the four, actually, don’t forget Jordan Vogt-Roberts and his AMAZING work on Kong: Skull Island. I would have loved to have seen Gareth stay with the franchise, but Star Wars won him over. I feel Dougherty did a tremendous job though, he is a legitimate fan, and has a very dark sense of humor as seen in his other films, and that translated well into KOTM. Plus his fascination with old-time myths and legends and ancient civilizations, he used all of that to create this spellbinding lore within the universe. Then Wingard came and kind of mucked it up a little. But the Hollow Earth theory was mentioned several times in the films, so this was obviously their plan from the start. But I’m not sure the execution was proper.

And bring the God of War guy back for the soundtrack. Makes a huge difference when these actually feel like ancient myths fighting. Whereas GvK was a silly contrived boxing match aside from Godzilla destroying the carriers & we got to hear his G14 theme again. Not enough military intervention either. Hollow Earth was just a big empty map with 3 snakes and some statues in GvK wtf was he thinking. Def hope we get Dougherty back to set up what he had planned.
