The problem is we’re dealing with echo chambers. These are naturally developed social circles of agreed perspectives that create their own challenges to the viewpoint. Thanks to technology they’ve become less contained.
So the natural battle lines drawn between viewpoints (the line drawn in the sand) is wiped out by “popular opinions” because it’s a lot easier to excise opposing viewpoints and reinforce beliefs.
Thus…popular opinions dominate the topics and challenges are drowned out by majorities. The internet is essentially a modern day Tower of Babel where like groups congregate and support themselves because of nothing more than a mutual understanding.
Like predators and prey in nature’s population control to ensure equilibrium…when one side is overpopulated it disrupts the balance in a way that can create cataclysmic events. That’s what we’re beginning to experience in a society that doesn’t fully grasp the consequences of consequence itself. Or the fact that freedom by it’s very nature is contradictory in that it’s primary requirement is responsibility.
TLDR: People only listen to people that agree with them thanks to the internet. That makes them stupid. If you cry wolf you’re automatically asked why it’s a problem. The people getting the most attention have never seen a wolf. When they do, the horseshoe becomes a circle.
