I feel like the plasma rifle is a missed opportunity. Here’s why:
The description states it’s “…Energy-based, with a venting process to reload the plasma shots.” Hearing that, you might think that as long as you don’t shoot too quickly, you’ll never need to reload. Nope! It’s still a reload, just with… A different animation I guess? Nothing really sets it apart aside from the AOE aspect.
Here’s how it could be made more interesting:
A cooling system. Rounds shot within 2 seconds of each other add to a counter. Cooling would be based on T=r/5. T is reload time, r is number of rounds shot. So, if you shoot 15 rounds, it will take 3 seconds to cool off.
Infinite ammo. This may sound overpowered, but there are a few ways to make it a bit more balanced. First, shooting more than 30 rounds sequentially will “Overheat”. To recover from overheating, you must wait 5 seconds, plus the given cooling time of 6 seconds. Second, create an “Out of Order” event. This would trigger once the gun has overheated 3 times, and would require the FT to pick up classic ammo to fix it. Additionally, the FT EMP gadget would knock the gun out if it’s currently in the main hand.
A revolver with a total of 6 rounds should also be added. It would have 1.5 times the cool down time, and would do slightly more damage.
Both would be unlockable at level 150, instead of 135. They would also take 20 levels to master instead of 10. This would give those at max level a bit more to do, and considering it’s alien tech, would make sense.
EDIT: Pressing B (switching firing modes) would go into the regular “single shot” mode. However, this would also allow you to charge up the shot when holding down LMB. A charged shot would use 25 ammo and would deal 25x the damage.
