I’m confused

Why would the word “nigga” be offensive if a White person says it to a Black person with no ill intent. It’s 2021, the word nigga is used by almost everyone as a slang term for “dude” or “bro”.

Like others have mentioned, context and the intent behind words are very important. We need to stop referring back to slavery and events in the past to justify treating White people like they’re so different from everyone. At the end of the day, we’re all human.

Says who?

Are you black? If you aren’t, then you are not entitled to tell black people what offends them and what doesn’t.

Intent behind the word does matter. How it is received also matters and it matters more than intent.

Rather than changing the way it is received to suit you, you might consider not using the word so it is not poorly-received.

Yeah, it’s so hard being a white, heterosexual male in America.

Also, slavery was abolished, in the context of our country, very recently.

Slavery might be illegal, but the effects are still felt and its political descendants are far more recent than legal slavery. We abolished slavery and went right into Jim Crow, and the ruling of Brown vs. Topeka was, what, 60-ish years ago?

How the fuck did we end up here I posted about the balance of this game 😂

😂 I agree.

But, when I see my fellow white people “white people-ing” I can’t keep my mouth shut.

I’m a person of colour. I’m just tired of seeing people get mad at White people for saying “nigga” when they’re not even trying to be racist. To me that isn’t real racism. All the things you mentioned in your other comment about systematic racism is something that people should be upset about.

You do know that racism can affect White people too and there are White people living in poverty alongside other ethnic groups.

Define “person of colour”. Based upon the spelling, I’m going to assume that you’re not from the United States as that is not our colloquial spelling. That’s not to be exclusionary, it’s to set the perspective - I’m specifically referring to the existence and history of racism and inequality in the United States.

This a form of economic discrimination. Racism cannot affect white people in the United States. Racism is a collection of the things that I explained before.

White people are not the victims of racism in a country that was founded by white, European conquerors. It could happen elsewhere, perhaps.

Not in America. Never in America.

I’m not White, is that more clearer for you lol. Also, yeah you caught me, I’m from Canada and racism exists here too.

I have to strongly disagree with this one. I’ve seen White people get discriminated and treated differently because of their race. Let me give you a scenario and you tell me if it’s racist. A White kid gets jumped by a group of Black kids because the kid is White. Is that racism or not?

That is not racism.

In America we would define that as a hate crime. Racially-motivated, sure, but not racism.

Getting your ass kicked because you are white isn’t racism.

Getting shot by the police while you are unarmed and then people spending investigative resources to find out why you deserved it is racism. Instead of properly investigating the LEOs that shot you, they investigate your Instagram so they can find a picture of you with a beer in your hand to show you were a trouble-maker. Racism is being murdered while in police custody and NO ONE GOES TO JAIL.

Racism can only be perpetrated by the dominant ethnic group, by those in power.

Anything else is just racial prejudice. Racism is having the power to fuck someone’s entire life because your ethnic group conquered your home nation and owns the criminal justice system.

God damn this thread got derailed

Definition of racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized. (taken from Google)

Racism is any kind of discrimination in which you treat people differently because of their race, therefore you can be racist towards White people.

I know about racial profiling by the police, and yeah that is racism.

I’d have to disagree with this one too. Nothing in the definition of racism says it has anything to do with power.

Also, saying you can’t be racist to White people is the same thing as saying Black people can’t be racist. Both are wrong.

Because you say it’s not ok to say it all, but then flip around and say it’s cool depending on how your relationship is with them.

“Rules for the, but not for me”

Also in response to the dude saying more blacks are killed by cops than blacks. Nope.
Check your statistics there bucko. And don’t come with that “disproportionate based on population” bullshit because black males (6%) account for roughly 50% of ALL TOTAL violent crime in America.

You’re ignoring the “typically a minority or marginalized people”.

You are going by the academic definition, yet ignoring a key piece of it, which says it is typically affecting marginalized peoples.

There is no such thing as a “marginalized white people” in the United States.

White people in America are the dominant ethnic group. We cannot be the victims of racism in a country where we are the dominant ethnic group. We could be victimized in other parts of the world, sure, but not in America.

You obviously didn’t read my post.

I’ve checked my statistics. Black people are around 3x more likely to be killed during a police encounter than white people.

But, okay.

You know White people are minorities in some areas in the US.
