I’ve taken a course in crisis management (marketing) when your reputation or brandimage is damaged.
There are times in which you will not improve your reputation by mixing yourself with the outrage and/or distrust.
Sometimes the only thing you can do (!) is work hard to fix your problems. Build something to surprise the community and keep delivering good work after you dealt with the problem.
If I was leading a project and “my community” would respond the same way as some individuals on this forum? I’d advice my team (basically order them) to stop responding to anything on the forum. I’d even advice them to stop reading the forum so they don’t get demotivated and make more mistakes than they fix.
You really gotta compare it to the moral of an army. Can you imagine what will happen to your soldiers if the country you are fighting for stops supporting you? What happens if the one thing you are putting your soul into starts to turn on you? Do you still feel like fighting for what you stand for?
So right now “we” are the assholes - arguably in our right - and we made our point. Loud and clear. Now the ball lies with Illfonic. They are staying quiet, for good reason. Imagine 1 developer starting a conversation now and the shitstorm he’ll receive.
Don’t forget… (!) there are developers receiving death threats because their community doesn’t like their choices. There are people out there who deem their own entertainment higher than the lives and safety of those creating their entertainment. There are people who forget that developers are just like you and I. And just like you and I they aren’t all great at any task. Just like you and I they make mistakes. Just like you and I, they have bosses who can make incompetent choices.
This is not one of them. This is strategic, and I think for good reason.
