It’s actually a Krummlauf, a german designed bent barrel and periscope for shooting around corners while remaining safely behind cover. It was quite brilliant and came in a variety of angles, but the sharper angled ones like the one pictured here often shredded the bullets and blew out after a few hundred shots. The nature of WW2 fighting also meant soldiers would constantly have to put them on and take them off, making them more of a hassle then they were worth. While ineffective in WW2, the less angled ones would have revolutionized trench warfare by allowing for soldiers to fire from complete cover, and the time required for the enemy to cross no man’s land would be ample to remove the krummlauf in order to shoot normally at the closer range.
