I recently gave my pet American Toad a completely new enclosure that I hand built! She absolutely loves it and has been eating well with mealworms and crickets! Not sure what I should name her, but if you all have any suggestions feel free to comment them.
Enclosure is my new all purpose amphibian enclosure. I will likely get another toad or maybe a frog to keep her company, and then I will get a bigger water dish. 1.5’ by 2.3’ by 1’
What happens when she wants to lay eggs and she has no water to do it in? Dont tadpoles need to swim in water to survive?
She has a water dish, but is not old enough to be egg laying. Female Egg laying age is 2 years old, and she is either severely stunted in growth or is not even a year old yet. If she did lay eggs, there is no male to fertilize the eggs, so tadpoles cannot form. If I were to get a male to breed them, which I may do this spring/summer, I will get a much bigger and deeper water dish to house the tadpoles. Currently the dish is big enough for her to comfortably soak and swim in, so I will improve upon it when I get a second toad. To get a scale of how big the water dish is, in the first photo she is to the top left above the white water dish, and to the left of the fossil rock.
I was watching this show on animal planet this afternoon. It was much like Tanked the fish tank but this guy does everything else. They did two bearded dragon enclosure that were self maintaining. They added the soil substrate with live material like leaves and other things. Added eggs of meal worms, wigs, crickets and others. As well as live specimens and allowed them a week to breed in the enclosure so they would never need food added. It was pretty cool
That’s really cool! I have considered making the enclosure bioactive, and I may do that in the future of the enclosure when I get another amphibian, whether it be a frog or toad.
