You may have heard of DBD, the asymmetrical slasherhorror-themed PVP game. In this thread I want to explain why I prefer predator:hunting grounds and what are the elements in game design this game has over DBD. Why this game is simply more fun. ps. I’ve played DBD sporadically (not very actively) since its launch 3+ years ago?
1.) The fireteam has goals other than mere surviving
This is actually huge and let me explain why. What this means in practice is that its possible for both parties to come out of the match somewhat satisfied. This is contrary to DBD where survivors only goal is to just, well, survive. In DBD when there is a ‘winner’, the other side feels like a ‘loser’. Losing is not fun. In PHG its possible for both sides to feel like at least a little bit like a winner, since the goals aren’t directly opposed. I think this is a genius stroke in game design.
Maybe it doesn’t feel that way when you autopilot through a mission as fireteam against a weak predator, but I guarantee you feel better about it compared to dying headlessly against an OP predator. (Lets face it, when people lose, they will cry that the other side is OP)
Even if predators main goal is to kill fire team members, there are NPC enemies predator can kill and quench that bloodlust at least a little. Even if the predator kills and claims a FT member (feeling pretty boss), the FT can call reinforcements and get that player back and finish their mission. In this case both side can feel satisfied. Predator got a trophy and FT finished their mission.
2.) The basic gameplay is simply more fun
Of those who have tried DBD in the audience, those who think that repairing generators in DBD is ‘fun and engaging’, raise your hands. Thought so. If you remove the killer from a DBD match, the match will be super-boring to the survivors. You just sit at a generator and hold button, press a button on reaction.
The killer gameplay is even worse, and could be summed up by imagining a survivor and a killer running in a circle around a barrel, while Yakety Sax is playing. Without survivors, all killer can do in DBD is… walk.
Compare this to PHG, where fire team gets to have varied missions they don’t know in advance, move about the map, shoot NPCs, collect collectibles, plant explosives, set up fire on stuff, blow up various objects and escape via the helicopter. Compare this to holding a button down.
Playing the predator, climbing trees, using thermal vision with all those nostalgic sound effects, shooting and gutting NPCs, bellowing to the sky. This without the other players involvement, which is where the really fun part starts. In any case, simply BEING a predator is already more fun than being a killer in DBD.
Sum up: I’m having lots of fun in PHG at the moment. Even if there are balance issues which I will discuss in other threads, I think this game has LOTS of potential and I hope the devs keep at it. Cheers for reading this far!
