Firstly, I’m a PS4 Pred main, I think I’m reasonably good but by no means the level of some of the top players here. However, despite the obvious nerfs to the Predator, I think the balance of the game is roughly about right after the latest patch.
Is it harder for Preds to win now? Certainly, but the game needs to be balanced around the majority of the player base, and that is most likely randoms playing as FT on a PS4.
It seems Illfonic has decided to try to adjust the game with the aim of creating longer matches (I think we can all agree that’s a good thing) and giving public FTs a better chance of survival. Previously, if you had an FT team made up of random players, there was very little chance of defeating an average-to-good Pred.
Since the patch, I’ve had to work a lot harder and play even more tactically in order to win. You really have to play the long game and chip away at the FT, choosing the right moment to strike, then disappear. The matches have in many cases lasted right up to the wire. However, winning matches like these is far more satisfying and rewarding than the games in the past where I simply trounced the opposition.
Obviously the side-effect of these changes is that any Pred encountering a pre-made PC squad is going to seriously struggle, with only the really great Pred players having a chance of victory, but these squads are the exception, not the rule. If you’re a PS4 Pred player who’s worried about encountering these, you can just turn cross play off.
Of course, the people who are losing out from all this are PC Pred players. Unlike PS4 players, they can’t avoid PC FTs with a mouse/keyboard setup (which is the main reason PC FTs tend to be deadlier than their PS4 counterparts) - they’re going to be far more likely to encounter squads they simply cannot hope to beat, but Illfonic has probably calculated that this is the smallest portion of the player base.
So in summary: Yes, it’s harder for the Preds now, but the hunt is on! No more insta-team-wipes in the first couple of minutes (well, some guys can still do that). Now we get to properly stalk the prey (as also with this patch the FT have been slowed down a little by a heavier-hitting AI).
For this game to have any chance of longevity and growth, the casual FT players needed a little more chance at winning instead of being little more than target practice. They now have that.
