Hard to say if I like it or not. It wasn’t bad, but nothing special either. Felt like it dragged on too. I realize it’s hard to create a mystery around the Alien IP after 40 years tho, so i shouldnt have such high expectations.

I feel like this movie was like og Alien, but with better explanations of what’s going on. Rook has company interests in mind, but he’s not against saving the crew; just whatever has best odds for mission success (save crew by killing the pilot gal at the start). We see how xenomorph evolves from cocoon and know more about it’s physiology and behavior from Rook/Andy. Etc Although all the brainy solutions by the crew (room temp, anti gravity, etc) seems somewhat logical, it was too much to expect from a bunch of teenagers, Rain especially. She had an answer for everything. Compound X creation was sketchy too, but I’ll let it pass.

I did really like the portrayal of the colony and how life is there at the start of the movie. As excited as I am about prospects of human space exploration, I can see it being that kind of sheetshow.

The station seemed like a remnant from Alien Resurrection which if intended was a nice touch.

Also, the movie really gave me Alien Isolation vibes. It’s like it was modeled from it from certain set pieces to station environments.

It’s ok if you don’t think about it too much. Definitely decent movie for a new generation but hard to suspend disbelief for older folks. Compare scenes from Aliens where Ripley and Newt were fighting facehuggers and when it happened in this movie where it was like fruit ninja training.

agreed. romulus is more of a movie to show to people who haven’t seen any of the other movies before

idk about yall but i personally love the idea of the queen from aliens still floating around in space, perfectly fine. it also might mean that the queen from avp is still swimming around in the arctic ocean.

So I watched it yesterday - no spoilers-
I thought it freakin captured the experience of watching Alien and Aliens and Alien 3 (with less A:R bit there is a little bit there) in this movie! Enjoyed it and would watch it again!

Sooooooooo just came back from Alien Romulus so what to say that wasn’t already said about it. Lets start

[

Overral the best alien movie in fucking decades, for me better than Alien 3 even (will probably be equal for some and i understand that fact.)

Lets start with the good: BEAUTIFUL Cinematography. God gorgeous scenes, great visual the asteroid belt was such a great idea and i looooooooooooooove the idea of Zero Gravity with acide blood my was it a cool scene. Great character work overrall, wayyyy better than the cast from both prometheus and covenant (excluding fassbender of course he is a league of his own) loved Andy arc, probably the better actor of the bunch here (hillarious get away from bitch btw). Rain actor was solid and enough to be different from Shawn and Ripley wich always hard.

Now the Xenomorph raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah best models in years, going be to the bio mechanicals look, no fucking CGI for once and i’m all here for it. (tho the tails look a bit too mechanials lmao). Behavior wise they are fantastic, perfect blend of both Side of the sepectrum, Alien side back to being sadistic monster who enjoy taking their time and of course the Aliens side, multiple monstrosity who spread the hive. Great monstruous scene and even Alien Isolation inspired!!! mymy this is the type of shite i want to see, GIVE ME MORE!!! Loved the scorched xeno, equivalent to Grid in therm of inteligence, tho a tad bit more selfish.

The facehugger are disgusting little shit that creep me out, great behavior like for the xeno. Also massive props to the chestburster who is as gory as ever like in the original. personal point to the damn Offspring birth. That made the whole cinema room (+50 peoples) Groan of disgust in unision. Hell.

Great action scene, the fast and second part of the plot escalate nicely and of course Weyland Yutani goes to his usual fucked up way that are, as usual, creepy and enjoyable to hate.

Now for the parts i don’t like.

Alright i was speeaking of the Xeno behavior so far. Than there is moment where…Fucking hell like when they corner the group at the elevator they are hesitating waaaaaaaaaaaay too fucking much, wayting for Rain to gun them all down or simply sleeping at the writter convenience wich is annoying.

Speaking of sleeping the end of the second act made growl but not for the right reason as the xenomorph are dispatched…Damn to easilly. As i suspected there is no fucking Queen but its unsurprising because Riddley is a prideful who think he is the father of the alien franchise (he is not.)

Now oh god. The whole fucking third act. URHG when i saw the black good being back during the second act and the rat abomination in the lab, i was fine. I thought that it was a nice continuity nod to prometheus and covenant. BUT NO IT AS RIDLEY SCOTT HANDPRINT ALL OVER IT AND. Well its riddley who writte the script alone so you know its gonna be fucking bad.

Lets start them, the aliens are dispatched to fucking easilly and of course Kay get injected with our dear mutagenic black goo. At first i thought i was going to see her either mold into a nasty xenomorph or fuse with her baby. But no she give birth to a nasty human hybrid (again the whole birth scene is veceral and great) but afterward the damn Offspring look kind of goofy and not creepy (expect when he stares in the corridor on is four that was creepy) but the rest is boring and predictable, another out of the airlock scene (tho with a quick alien 2 twist) and it end predictably with again another android and human surviving…like in Aliens, Prometheus, covenant…

I honnestly would ahve prefered the scorched Xeno being either the main boss or co boss, figthing the Offspring and Rain instead of a boring last battle through a damn airlock. Also again it feel Riddley was in charge for the last part. Perhaps i’m wrong perhaps its all Fede Álvarez, i will have to wait the details and scrapped ideas but i really hope that it was a Riddley move( so i can blame is sorry ass). Also a bit too much re ussed idea at the end of the movie, fake nostalgia ain’t fun when its recycled idea instead of fun nods and reference like in the first and second act.

also while i enjoyed Ash androids return at first, knowing that its again, Fucking AI wich it wasn’t the case but it is. Next please, change the voice actor and pay them ffs.

Overrall good movie again. But a weak third act that will not be too memorable. Tho now i’m more confident about the alien futur than ever.

Until Riddley decide to make a third film for his shity prometheus saga. PLease don’t, lets somebody who know how to writte a script do it. s

Fun nods are ok but I think what covenant brought to the table in terms of new species allows the franchise to have more opportunities to allow us to find more story. I mean without AC would we have gotten the DLC AFTE pathogen? The effort to expand on a white hive was interesting to me. AR doesn’t quiet give enough detail. Such that:

How did the chestburster become the caccoon? and how did the xeno from the cacoon just suddenly appear on the ground? There is too much left out of the cut that leaves too much to the imagination but I digress it might not have been any better if they animated this whole sequence for us.
I think the “final boss” design was a little hard to swallow. There is not enough time for such a thing to exist.

I heard Fede say he had a longer cut of the film. Heres hoping there is something interesting there.

Maybe the chestburster was like a caterpillar and built the cocoon like that? Idk. As for the cocoon -> xeno, we visibly saw that. After the bug pokey stabbey’d the guy who prodded it with the electro zappy stick, we can see the bug start to kinda fall out of the cocoon and start to “unfold.” At least thats what i saw. And for the final boss, yeah that stinked. A decent idea, but it already got used in resurrection and not many people liked the newborn. At least they made it gory…

Fede also said that he’s open to co-directing another AVP or smth like that 💀

yeah, i know. doesn’t sound too interesting. In hind sight the the newborn in Ressurection can now stand side by side with the mofo.

The whole theory was that guns might make xenos apprehensive and supposedly it worked, but right after that they all throw themselves at the bullets without hesitation 🙄. In Alien/s they were smart enough to stick to shadows, use vents, be sneaky. At the very least they could have made a tactical retreat.

Also it’s interesting that supposedly anti-gravity didn’t phase them or their movements.

I was wondering the same thing about why the narrative didn’t just display them testing this theory yet it was assumed they were scared because somehow they used weapon fire earlier after their outbreak?
Second, gravity is an interesting thing. I would be interested in seeing an xeno evolve to utilize gravity or the absence of it to their advantage and one Giger painting comes to mind its of that of the serpant/snake (limbless) version in one of his paintings. I would love to see that one on film.

“Alien Monster V,” No. 410, 1979. Additional Alien design cues are obvious in this airbrushed piece.

I remember opening up Gigers Alien artbook in 2000 and was awestruck. Its definitely high time people found out of him.

Also, i found the nod to the original Typography in the original 1979 film during the opening credits to have been very keen!

Anti gravity is a niche environment so maybe adaptation to that would not be stressed. I suppose since the station resets gravity in cycles they would be used to it.

Good point about the rifles and fighting that took place as xenos were killing everyone onboard. If the rifles were used, xenos might be reserved in their presence, sound of shots fired.

Jumping and climbing is important feature of xenos in enclosed environments. Perhaps serpent body might work well in an open one. Maybe that can be explored in the next movie as its likely that they’ll be breeding xenos and/or hybrids there if Compound reaches W-Y labs.

Third movie will be xenomorph park. Lol

BLUR THE SPOILERS FOOL
