Idk, I don’t really agree with that, but we might as well have different understanding of what subtlety in movies is.
MORE WOKENESS!
I didn’t say it was subtle. It’s front and center but it’s not the dominant theme to me. More like a side note, especially in the second one, at least from my perspective. In fact I personally feel the more subtle ones are actually the dominant themes. Like the Vietnam allegory, people could (and did) watch the movie and completely miss that analogy
Why are we still humoring this? We’re not going to get anywhere on either side
Like someone beating the predator is gonna have some trans gender Only Fans. Keep it old school. Keep it 80s
Haven’t watched Black Panther. So I’m not going to argue that point.
You can see the difference in storytelling between older movies and modern movies they make now. Movies aren’t built on storytelling or meaningful characters, just how many things they can tick off the identity politics checklist. They make sure to demonize men rather than viewing men and women as equal (but if that’s your idea of equality, power to you I guess). That’s why Ellen Ripley works as a character. She’s rational, cunning and doesn’t need identity politics to be strong.
What’s interesting too is that she doesn’t actually break any stereotypes really while still proving women and men are equal.
If look at the development through the movie, she starts out with PTSD essentially, then recognizes the potential danger of her not going and it allows her to push through her fear. She then takes charge in the crisis without actually doing so (“Corporal Hicks is in charge here…”) because her being the subject matter expert makes her the best suited to make the decisions. The entire third act actually reinforces a gender stereotype on both ends as it’s essentially maternal instict that (arguably) drives both Ripley and the Queen in their actions in the climax of the film.
First one is on me - your welcome ;-)
Very solid point, man. That’s actually something I didn’t consider.
Nobody. NO-BO-DY. Is demonizing men.
This is such a weird take. It’s beyond weird.
Okay, Captain Marvel - the most feminist movie of all time - what feminist agenda does it push? Where is the WOKENESS that this movie is criticized for?
Yes, and Alien in 1979 literally was criticized for women strong just as well. You all just happened to forget somehow. Because nostalgia.
I knew it had to be you. That’s it you’re fired!
Right, so if there is “maternal instinct” in the movie it means that it can’t be about fighting gender norms.
Sure thing.
I didn’t say it didn’t fight gender norms. It does exactly that and proves that a woman is just as capable as a man when the need arises.
I’m not sure if I’d call Marvel the most feminist movie of all time. They just gave her no character, beyond “I’m StRonG grrrr”. But I recall the controversy before the release of the film with Larson not wanting to be interviewed by white men, for some oddball reason, (or wanting them to see the movie??). Similarly, Elizabeth Banks (of Charlies Angels) blamed sexism for the box office bomb of the movie. It’s really not a weird take, it’s subtle in certain movies (more obvious in others) but I guess it’s because Hollywood wants to appear as a martyr of “progressiveness”.
Did you see the Black Christmas remake??
I’ve never really looked at the movie like that.
Neat
First time I saw it when Newt runs up and hugs her and says “Mommy” it was my first thought. Then I saw the extended cut with the scene where she finds out about her daughter dying while she was in cryosleep and went 100% on that
Interesting I’ll have to rewatch that movie
They use POC to signal they are not only racist to black people, but basically anyone who’s got a little bit more melamine than them…
Ironically, I know “white” people with darker skin than mine, so I’m not even sure exactly how the whole thing works…
If you are middle eastern you are POC but if you are italian or french you are white, even though your your skin color may be lighter than the others…
It’s not. She’s another terrible infalliable social justice invention because they’re incapable of writing from different points of view. Definitely doesnt make it the most feminist movie of all time. She’s just an insufferable character, added onto the pile of insufferable characters that all stem from people with the same mindset. Ask yourself why people hate Captain Marvel but like Scarlet Witch. Is it because the audience hates women or is Witch is actually capable of failure and fails time and time again? You know, because she’s an actual character and experiences human things like grief and loss.
Meanwhile everyone just wanted to see Captain Marvel get punched in the face because its great seeing shitty characters finally get knocked down a peg. Man of Steel was also only interesting because the military-trained kryptonians were absolutely destroying superman and rightfully so.
Your point about superman fighting actual nazis and soviets back in the 80s because it was propaganda of its time and its exactly why people grew tired of that iteration of the invincible infallible superman and his cartoonishly evil villains that have no motive beyond being N A Z I S.
Superman is the bad guy now more often than not people find him more interesting as an insanely powerful villain than as a mary sue.
The most interest anyone had in Rey was when they were teasing at turning her into a villain to make people actually care & there be some threat of something happening to this character but no no no not my precious infalliable femnist icon! People might formulate their own message and opinions on the character and we can’t have that because they are the most capable, competent person in the room. Those kinds of characters make everyone else in the story and their own arcs pointless because they must outshine everyone or people might miss the message that theyre POWERFUL.
The only time I see leftists make any exception of the above is when they’re like
“I-i’m not white i’m jewish”
I am white. It’s just that your nazi friends that don’t consider me white.
