The jury is still out on that, but the Othello example is interesting. This might be circular logic, but if the AI is trying to predicting the next move, it has a purpose for that. That purpose might be similar to what humans consider winning. At the very least there are three options to exhaust moves, to win, lose or tie. If would seem it’s trying to win or at least tie. If given just game results and not the explicit rules, somehow it’s determining that winning and not tying or losing as the priority.
Its definitely evolving in a sense.
Its getting better all around. Improving.

For AI to gain consciousness as we know it, I think we’ll need quantum computing and parallel processing. And a metric ton of power. Probably fusion. What’s worrying is we’ll all probably live to see all 3 of these requirements met, so it’d be a matter if anyone is capable/willing to do it.
