I think trailer expectations were subverted when kong spent half the movie getting a powerup axe just to land one hit with it that pissed godzilla off and he just mauled kong ending the fight immediately

I think combined with that , there was alot of speculation about plot , none of which turned out to be true

No one expected a straightforward 2-0 with a boss hamfisted in at the end without much explaination. Like Gigan couldve just teleported in at the end from nowhere and the movie wouldnt change. KOTM definitely handled plot elements better, atleast ghidorah was there from the very start.
