Prey review

People keep saying this like the brother shitting all over the pred wasn’t equally bad

Bro, if anything, I hear from those who hated the film, at least, that scene alone made people who hated Naru, wished it was about her brother as the protag instead. Well one thing for sure, this is 100% the first time I’m hearing someone hating on the 1v1 of Taabe vs Feral.

This is the first time you’ve heard someone hate on the pred getting styled on melee 1v1?

I’m sure there are a subset of the viewers who do think that and it isn’t warranted. Female empowerment movies can work (i.e. fury road, kill bill-- although I’m not if they technically class as empowerment films purely because they star a woman), sometimes the film’s message can be too on the nose. Idk I’m an advocate for subtly and superb storytelling over directly telling the viewers what its trying to convey.

The film did both, in parts. Having Naru hunt instead of conforming to her typical tribal role is effective in conveying her motivation and isn’t preachy. Then it drops the ball later by having her scolded by some guys in her hunting party ("go back where you belong… “why do you hunt-- because you all think I can’t”; personally, having her say “for the challenge” would have been more effective but idk I can be picky.

Only issues I have with the final fight is it felt rushed (especially the CGI- gave me 2018 vibes) and it seemed like Naru was never in peril. Whereas Dutch barely survived and got battered. It could be an issue of seeing a woman getting assaulted on-screen, akin to her fights earlier on with the frenchman, and her hunting party.

Also, nothing personal against you for the meme-- I just always wanted to post that xD

No joke, yes. I’m not even starting shit or anything, I never heard complaints about it until now. Just how badass it looked, people talking about how this should have been a tag team moment for the siblings or how Taabe should have been the protag instead. Not even here to say anything against your thoughts on that scene either, just honest telling of first time encounter of this opinion.

That’s not a bad fix to the third act rather than the pred getting solo’d by both of them Marvel style

Finally some good fuckin analysis food!

Well didn’t her mom correct her on that thought when she said we don’t do it to prove anything but do it for survival? I recall that was in the conversation between them when she asked Naru why she wanted to hunt. This is where I do have a critical fix that I wanted to address in that have Naru realize this is not just to prove herself but to also protect her tribe seeing how it decimated both wildlife, Comanche, French, and her brother. Like have a moment of self reflection ya know? It would have added that extra fleshed out characterization of her between her people and her conflict against the Predator. Like I saw her speech about people underestimating her is her talk of taking vengeance on both the French leader and Feral for harming her brother but a lil more seasoning would have been great. Like have Feral show up with Taabe’s skull on his hip, Naru realizing this and going ice cold vengeance for Feral’s blood.

HHhhhhmmmm I get that but the film did convey that if Feral gotten a real hit in, she would have been dead. She had to be agile and fast 100% of the time or else Feral would kill her. And the film did develop her combat style to reflect that, and in real life, Comanche warfare was all about speed and agility while the knife, bow, and tomahawk did the talking. That’s why I didn’t get upset in how she demolished the French trappers in freeing her dog as Comanche really did move like that, rely on speed and reflexes with a weapon in their CQC tactics. Heck, even the struggle with her new tomahawk fighting style is good, seeing as its still a new thing to use in combat and figuring it out throughout the fight is a good show of progress.

As for the final battle, she did get choked slammed and even slashed twice by the shield, just simply they weren’t lethal blows or she moved away enough to not get sliced in half but still get some damage. There is an issue of if she did get hit like a punch, then people would say she should have been dead if that punch killed a bear earlier, so its just the matter of demonstrating speed, agility, and tactics to combat her foe.

Wouldn’t mind seeing something like this in the next film. A sibling vs predator fight or even a couple vs Predator fight. Like a Viking berserker and his shieldmadien wife vs Predator or something, I dig it.

Thanks for the incredible feedback and time in doing it. I may have to rewatch it as it appears I have forgotten some details. Nothing is perfect, but some seasoning, as you said, would have mitigated some of the film’s criticism.

As for the final fight, those are good points. Realistically no human could overpower a predator, but with cunning tactics and methodology. I guess it reminded me too much of the 2018 final fight.

How? Prey had a perfect secondary male character who gave up and was like, no you hunt him, I go no further, even though he was whooping his ass that fight with one arrow Wick…. and that final fight was completely bs, sure he was shot in the back of the head but he outright had many moments that woulda killed her or winded her, and it didn’t, overall the movie is decent but not the best sequel

A movie i love , I watch it regular infact and I seen it twice in cinemas . But I hate women in movies apparently. The difference with fury road and this was fury road had such a good movie around the message that you can overlook it , prey doesn’t.

I will go one better, I watched it online (allegedly) and after that I drove 75 miles to a cinema to watch it and then again to watch it in 3d . So that’s 300 miles plus two tickets 😄 just to support it . Its a movie that promoted feminism ,it wasn’t woke , but it was a feminist message.

Prey is 100% a feminism message , thats not what put me off about it , it was the movie itself . So nobody can say I’m hating on it because a woman is the star and they cant say it isn’t a pro feminism movie . It just wasn’t done as good.

Hell , I like pred 2 , with a black lead . Nobody on here has said “its because it was a comanche cast” , but a lot of the feedback online says it and even went as far to say negative reviews are from the kkk 😄.

After 2018 people were desperate for a decent pred movie and I think at least , thats why this is being defended so much .

I remember my dad driving us out to the theatre to ‘witness it’. He caught me up to speed days before by watching the first 3 together for the first time. Great piece of Australian cinema :)

Yeah I have no issue with movies with specific messages, so long as it isn’t preachy. Its sort of analogous to the original Godzilla then later to specific sequels, where subtle caution of environmentalism were substituted for vacuous, preachy messaging.

Its annoying aye, and quite disingenuous. They’ll promote the film as stunning and diverse and label all detractors (most with genuine criticism) as every “-ist” in the dictionary.

The original mad max is glorious , its probably one of my favourite movies , very iconic . Road warrior was great aswell and even thunderdome had its good parts.

I was wary when fury road was announced but knowing it was miller and then Tom hardy playing the role , I didnt think anybody else outside of Gibson could play the part , but Hardy knocked it out of the park . Even the furiosa movie coming out , I will watch it . I’m not a fan of the lead actress but I wasn’t a fan of theron either . It should be a good flick .

I could be lying though , it is a female lead and will probably continue the feminist message 😄 so I will get it out there early , IT WILL SUCK

My only issue with fury road was that they wrote the interceptor off at the start and then again near the end 😒. The original was done so well , as a kid , the biker gang genuinely scared me 😁

I AM THE NIGHTRIDER . It was epic

I felt the same sentiments. Similar extent in the first 3 really; the iconic vehicle was only used in the last 15 mins, the 2nd one doesn’t have much screentime and it isn’t even in the 3rd. No justice for that beauty.

Made a lasting impression in its short duration on-screen, regardless.

I would think its one of the most iconic cars? Maybe not with a younger crowd , but it has to be up there.

Well even in the original , you see it for 30 seconds through the movie and then its in the last 15 minutes if that
