They already severely weakened Pred killer by saying it’s vulnerable to gun fire, but nothing
On plasma yet
Discuss and Debate Time! (PHG’s Lore & Characters)
It probably will. First spaceship that will travel anywhere significant could be nuke powered. Holograms just look cool. Doesn’t Halo tech have tons of those?
Off topic: what was Maddie banned for? I’m sure she’d be all over this post.
Stuff in Halo is built for a bunch of different species to use and a part of the reason plasma weapons aren’t great is that they’re just scaled down ship guns because the prophets are relatively new to the concept of ground warfare. They’re used to just glassing planets, but can’t do that when they need the relics.
as for the second part, probably ““politics””
Ok, I’ll give that Yautjas are not a very intelligent species untill more concrete evidence is presented either wise. The hunt ritual and tech use simplicity make it more of the case than not at this point.
I do miss the political discussions we used to have
Wow I didn’t expect this to blow up as it did 😶
Yautja lore is always a contentious topic
True true, especially when so much has yet to be explored
I mean there you go, if you can teach them how to troubleshoot a TV, then you can teach them how it’s made and functions. A person from the 14th century would have trouble to learn what the TV is on their own but they do have the ability to learn these new concepts with the right guidance the same way we can learn about anything, as that’s how the human mind is, capable of learning and adapting to new variables in the environment. Predators being a sapient species, should also be able to learn and construct new things, I have doubts they are a race of dumbs.
I mean it took her a huge amount of time to figure it out and that was with her 114 navigational training she had, something the average “primitive” does not have. Even then she still said it was all a guessing game at that point. By that average, most human beings wouldn’t have break into it that sooner, taken even more time to figure it out, or maybe not even figure it out at all. In most media, you usually see the main character figure out how to pilot the alien space ship to escape the aliens behind them, zapping away with their laser guns, until they figure it out on the last minute and blast away to safety right before the mothership they rigged to explode goes off. Here, they actually emphasized that their tech is still not easy to understand within a day or two.
I mean look at the plasmacaster Keyes gotten from Dutch back in 1999, it took till 2025 for them to make it into a usable weapon for humans and its still in the prototype phase. Alien technology doesn’t automatically mean that its indecipherable, just too complex to learn within the moment, and even more so if the person in question doesn’t have the educational background to give some kind of edge to figure it out.
Yes, the potential is there, but the point to make is that lore doesn’t need them to be smart. Their preoccupation with hunt (dangerous behavior) fits better with a primitive society. The lore needs a weakness so a species with superior tech would still lose. The best answer at the moment is we don’t know, but i could see why it would make more sense for Yautjas to be viewed as species where instinct trumps intelligence.
We’ve had their weakness since the first film.
Cockiness. They are, the Males mostly, arrogant & adrenaline junkies who purposely put themselves at greater risks for Honor and the adrenaline rush of a good fight.
Yes, he got lucky with net trap (could have been shredded there), got nicked by Mac, wears lucky the team didn’t to have a sniper (Mac and Dillon scene), played with Dutch too much.
Still the lore focusing on the hunt leans more towards primitive culture. The tech is there for plot - intergalactic travel, a stylish looking hunt.
At best, it’s inconsequential to the lore if they are intelligent or primitive. That is not a prerequisite for hunt experience.
Their culture is Tribalistic & Nomadic, but they’re not “primitive”. They have Scientists, Engineers & Mechanics along with the required Medical Expertise to make essentially Star War’s Bacta and put it into syringes or “Crystal Shards” which they inject into their body to promote some form of hyper advanced healing factor. The Dark Blade Clan is essentially a group of hyper intelligent Scientists with Technology which is outright stated to put every other Clan to shame.
What makes the Predators compelling Antagonists, and sometimes even Protagonists, is that despite how genetically & technologically superior they are to most other races: they fall for the oldest trick in the book. Hubris. The belief that they are invincible, that because they are naturally superior to most other species and that their technology is so advanced in comparison to most Sapient life leads them to self destructive vices. It makes them arrogant, cocky & blind to how resourceful & cunning some prey like Humans can be when backed into a corner.
They insist upon near suicidal battle tactics & fighting overwhelming odds because to them, it is the best way to gain Honor & reputation in their Society. That is their ultimate weakness, their downfall. Its no different than a Human hunting a Bear with a modern Rifle only to then throw the gun away and pull out a small combat knife to kill it because “It’ll make for a better story.”
Its very fascinating and can make for great stories, as seen by the original two movies & Concrete Jungle, which explores this entire concept from the Predator’s eyes. Scarface is defined by being an Elite who thought himself essentially a God on the battlefield only to lose an eye, his mask & weapons and then Honor to a woman who had just given birth and was armed only with a small revolver. He was exiled for 100 years for failing to die in his outright stupid move of blowing up an entire city because he was bitchmad and in that time he was humbled, came back wiser & with purpose and ended up ironically saving the Earth from Borgia Industries.
I agree with that assessment. My only point of contention is that movies don’t focus on their intelligence at all. It’s an unknown. From the movies, tech is there for convenience (travel) and and flare/suspense (hunt). It doesn’t diminish that experince whether Yautjas are intelligent or primitive.
Now, if there is evidence of high society in other media I’ll accept that cause i don’t know any better.
You’d think though many experiences they would learn not to underestimate humans. Typical villain behavior. Never learn
Film franchise. They are portrayed as primitives with guns in the films.
Character going “I JUST HAD MY POWER LIMITER ON” or “OR I WAS JUST GOING EASY ON YOU” is not a real weakness lol.
Other media portrays them as essentially a Nomadic mix of Vikings & Samurai. They have Clans, operate on an Honor system which dictates their Hierarchy & enjoy great feasts where they make bardic songs out of their tales from Hunts and do a bunch of celebratory games alot like the Scottish. Everything from tests of strengths, to drinking contests and even sparring matches. Its very traditional warrior culture stuff but with a ranking & Honor system akin to Feudal Japan. If you’re in a Clan, you’re pretty well off and gotta focus on helping your Clan rise through the ranks of society so that the Council of Ancients grants you more rights & power in Yautja Society. If you’re not in a Clan, you’re basically the Yautja equivelant of a Ronin.
Literally the entire weakness of the Saiyans. Typical weakness of a Warrior Culture, saw it historically in our own too.
The Elites in Halo take the Yautja Honor system up to 11 even, they outlawed fucking Medics because they saw spilling Blood outside of Battle as worthy of death because Blood is “sacred”.
All of that stuff is very hunt-centric. I would like to hear more about arts, societal problems, infrastructure and industry, scientific research.
Well one of the new books that came out last month is a collection of Short Stories and has all of that. There’s one about a bunch of Predator Mechanics, literally the guys who fix up ships, repair tech & all that responding to an SOS call because they wanna be recognised and get some Honor points. Rather Ghostbusters in premise really, the nerdy guys taking the call to action and all that.
There’s another with a Female Scientist who studies human culture too, basically doing research expeditions and all that.
The greatest mary sues of the universe?
