Hey just early prototypes to what we got now lol
Figures, Figures, Figures!
Nope cuz Zilla is the title fans gave to 98 cuz nobody liked him and why Toho made Godzilla own him in final wars lol
But I know how to save him…mechazilla! THINK ABOUT IT! THE BODY WASNT COMPLETELY DESTROYED! MAYBE HE CAN FIGHT HIS UNIVERSE KONG OR BETTER! THAT LAST EGG THAT SURVIVED AT THE END OF 98 film!
No it isnt.
It shares more similarities with the OG than the anime ones do.
Aw man! Also GET HYPED!
And I reject that rejection. Same as I do the butthurt buttians who constantly complain about the SW sequels
Dude that was me lol also oh you got to be kidding me why did they not do that for cinema!
Hehehe I remember, cuz the Obi Wan series thread.
Idk why no theatrical release. My guess is 2 fold…
1.) Apple saw GvK made $ and paid out the nose to get the rights and
2.) It will feature mainly humans and barely and G. This is an issue with many many many kaiju projects. Most show runners, directors, etc just can’t get in through their stupid heads that no one watches monster movies etc for the people, even if they’re smoking hot and naked. That’s not why we’re there. I’ll bet 5 bucks that there will be whole episodes where G isn’t even in it. Hope not, but I can see it. Hopefully, whoever is running it will take Adam Wingards approach and have lots and lots of kaiju action per episode. Like if people are talking about G in a way that could be done by showing what he’s doing and having v/o, that’d be the best approach. But we’ll see. Hollywood types have the most fragile egos. It’ll be up to us to gatekeep the crappy stuff out of it. If it winds up like the Walking Dead, all internal politics in later seasons instead of focusing on G and other Titans, I’m out. The last thing I want to see is any old Sci-fi show with G for 15 seconds now and then.
ahem
Godzilla (1998) IS, officially, and legally, a Godzilla. Always has been. There’s a LOOOT of disinformation around that movie and what Toho did in 2004 with Zilla. Tristar lost the rights to the character sometime after 2003 (it was planned to be a trilogy buuuut we all know that didn’t happen), so the likeness reverted back to Toho. When decided to incorporate the 1998 Godzilla into Final Wars, Shogo Toriyama (Toho producer who worked on every Godzilla film from 1989-2004) insisted they rename it “Zilla”, as Tristar took the “God” out of “Godzilla”. So they scanned in one of the 98 figures to make a rough CG model and named it Zilla, even creating one of those little circular trademark designs with the monster’s image. However, Zilla and Godzilla 98 were two separate entities, especially legally; while Zilla had a trademark design, so did Godzilla 98, with the name specifically, “Godzilla”. So, for all intents and purposes (and whether angry fans liked it or not), Godzilla 1998 WAS, and IS, “Godzilla”.
Two years ago, Toho allowed the trademark for “Zilla” to expire. Thus, going forward, all media with Zilla will simply just be “Godzilla” with the circle trademark of his design.
IMO, after watching the movie again recently, I really feel that the design of the monster was given a bad wrap. If you look at early concept art, he looks like a goddamn beast; slender, but frightening, like he’s hiding more power than you can see. That didn’t translate well in the film, but overall its a decently good design, which DOES carry the legacy of Godzilla (Toho is well known for having a long, long list of requirements for the character, which admittedly was adhered to in 98), at least in looks if not entirely in personality. The MOVIE, oof, the movie itself is something of a stinkfest. There is an extensive record of Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin (more the former than the latter) bashing the Toho franchise and wanting to completely change and write their own version (they essentially gave Toho an ultimatum, and after over a decade trying to get an American version made, Toho more or less caved in because $$). Bash the movie all you want, but try and give the design some more credit.
Bruh, SpaceGodzilla was a badass. And Destoroyah is an absolute demon. Heisei also gave me my favorite designs (91 and 95), the gorgeous Anna Nakagawa (RIP) and brought Akira Ifukube back to score four out of the six films (84 is technically Showa). And the psychic connection between Miki and Godzilla, while it DID become more ludicrous, started out as something that could have been better explored and done better.
Also, vs. Biollante is one of the better films in the series, and THE best of the Heisei era, and that was a mostly human-driven plot.
God i love Godzilla
Except the 1998 one we dont talk about that
…I just made a long-ass post DEFENDING it, bruh.
That Godzilla looked like a dinosaur
I own several X-Plus, including the original Sakai 91. I’ll have to post pics once my new display is ready.
Well, all Godzilla designs are saurian some way, as that’s what he was based off of.
Lemme rephrase: the 1998 one looked TOO MUCH like a dinosaur
Yes just a monster brawl movie, no people just carnage! Oh probably a TV series and I want them to be close calls and rematches in later episodes!
It’s only legacy is giving new Godzilla movies the flat head
2014
Earth
I hate it because it makes Godzilla look like a dinosaur when the original design was a mix between gorira (ゴリラ), “gorilla”, and kujira (クジラ), “whale”. The word alludes to the size, power and aquatic origin of Godzilla.
Nah, we need people, man. Dudes who are like FUCK THE HUMANS GIMMI MONSTRRR SMASHHHHH never really “got” the Godzilla franchise, or the kaiju genre in general. The human story has always, always been the central point, its the monsters and what they do that revolves around it. Monsters are the focus, and they are the narrative, but they cannot drive the plot just on themselves. Some of the best films in the franchise had strong human drama (54, 64, 89, 01, off the top of my head).
Also I’m making a Godzilla thread so we can discuss this stuff there instead of here.
