I think they knew it wasn’t a man , they sort of had to deal with whatever it was with the training and experience in war they had.
At that point in the movie , they either ran and died , or stood their ground and died . Dutch got lucky and probably accepted he wouldn’t survive , i think in the military, if you aren’t going to survive then you try and take out as many enemies as possible and make it somewhat meaningful. I think personally thats why dillon said “maybe I can get even”

It was on Dutch’s mind, that it’s not human, before there trap. He must have had doubt at least, considering how Billy felt about it.
They should have separated after the trap tho.

Maybe , but strength in numbers ? They had limited ammo and they would have stood a better chance if mac hadn’t of run off .
They were pretty fucked from a tactical point of view , Billy was killed with one strike and if dutch didn’t discover that it had thermal vision? He would have been taken out .

Perhaps if Dillon and Mac didn’t leave, Billy would not challenge the Pred solo either. At least the could keep eyes open. I wonder if Pred would attack all of them. Though he tried at the trap, clearly that was a mistake and he needed some time to feel sorry for himself on that tree where Mac saw him cause he was toast if they hadnt hesitated.
He did supposedly dispatch Hopper’s team head on. But maybe they were caught off guard and at least Dutch’s team had time to come to terms with the fear.

I like that idea. I want to believe there is either a time based connection or a dna lineage connection considering although we want to believe yautja live forever, they are likely travelling through space time.

It shouldn’t have to make much sense other than they think that that particular person’s dna has killer mentality. where in actuality its really that person’s upbringing in that particular time period. Sounds kind of cool to a young person, but ultimately science would rip it apart. Now unless that particular persons family lineage heir killed a yyautja and that yautja wanted that persons complete family wiped out from the beginning of time, that would be kind of cool but wouldn’t make sense because great grand father Dutch would not have been anything like Dutch 87. He’d proabably be a farmer with butter knife skills or something.
