THE BADLANDS REVIEW

I’ll start from the list in which you wrote and I’ll explain more on my reasoning for calling back to the older movies, I myself am not DEEP deep into the predator franchise as much as others are here, but I’ve tried my best understanding everything as I go, imo the reason why I say “ego” for most of the deaths shown (and I’ll excluded S and The cause I know as much of how bad those are compared to the others) but the preds are told and displayed as “the ultimate killers” and we see them show that in their respective movies, for the human protagonists all of them witness the ultimate killers murder groups of people with ease, jungle killing first group of American soldiers then killing arnies group, 2 going on a mass spree, prey killing both natives and the invaders, KoK each of them having their own sprees. And then what plays into that “ego” is that they underestimate the protags and that’s what leads to their defeat by being outsmarted, it’s the “ego” of being ultimate killers that gets to them and the same is told in Dek’s story, even as a runt he still believes he can follow the honor code and even at first saying that he didn’t need the synth’s help and he pays for it it, and even with her “help” he still thought of her as a “tool” for most of the movie.

I’ll say from what I saw during the run of the movie, I wouldn’t take Dek’s strange jump and moving from killing separate things as him learning “combat” experience but it’s clearly shown that it’s more of an “adapting” experience, he very clearly did not gain combat experience from it and it shows in the fight with the two preds and his father cause he was still getting beat up but he adapted(using the dust from the ship to counter the cloak stuff like that) and countered, which in its own is a combat experience.

The run time was very much so a problem not in the way of “the movie should’ve been longer” but more of a “the movie has time skips and it leaves holes in the plot” which there I will say is the bad writing side because that could be a very good reason to why you don’t see him gain that “experience”

Finally for the female side of things, yes I will agree in other titles like terminator, Star Wars, (I don’t do much of Indiana jones lol) they do that shift trend of women being leads and being a “Mary sue” in some terms, but in this movie I just don’t see it in this movie, maybe yes in something like Prey where Naru WAS the main protag but in Badlands both female synths still felt like side characters, Dek even treats our “main” synth as one too, the weakness of Dek is in the character himself thinking he can be what he is not yet and I don’t think the females “emasculate” him for it. Our synth was like the “comedy” side of things while the villain synth was show as strong because she had a company behind her while doing it, doesn’t make Dek any less of a strong character than he is and even with help he still triumphed in his own way.

I don’t know like the ins and outs to writing and how people delve into it to look at the serious tones and all that to form opinions from their own personal beliefs, and if people think it’s bad writing then that’s what they can think, what I will say though is people should also take the “new” writing and not just shoot the person down for writing a story how they see it and see how it can be a learning experience for next projects and stuff like that (whatever power of friendship yada) because at the end of the day, Movies, comics, books like these are for fun at the end of the day

100% disagree. At the start, yes, but overtime he adapts and actually uses his environment. He rushes in because he was arrogant, and changes his way through how he adapts towards the end of the movie. And I’m pretty sure he did actually take down the entire synth base, if you were watching that part. Also 99% Bud is his pet lol. They also didn’t kill the Kalisk because none of them thought to go inside the goddamn fucking beast.

I disagree with that being the case in the first two movie. Arnie got the upper hand one time, with the exploding arrow. From then on, any tactic he used was overcome by the predator. The death blow on the predator was pure luck. 2, I’ll grant you a little more, but the predator underestimated humans as a whole. When Danny chased him down to the meat plant; I wouldn’t really call that outsmarting. But the later half of that movie was weaker than the former. Prey and KoK can’t really be used for comparison because the same person made them and Badlands. The problem with Dek’s ego is that he shouldn’t have one. Using your (faulty) premise, the other movies has the predator on a killing spree, proving that they can handle themselves, so when they come across something they can’t handle, they don’t realize it and die. Dek never showed he could handle anything, his ego is unfounded. And the “tool” line was clearly him rationalizing taking her along, not really his core belief.

Going from ‘certainly getting killed without even landing a glancing blow’ to ‘winning a fight when the odds aren’t in your favour’ is a massive leap when there was nothing he learned on that planet that could be applied here. Even the dust cloud (being the first clever thing he did in the movie) had no precedent in the film. When I inevitably watch the film again, I’ll watch that final fight first and see if any move or tactic he uses then gets used even faintly in the rest of the movie. I’m certain nothing would come close.

Now you are writing a film that wasn’t made. You’re not being paid the big bucks, don’t write the movie for them. Even so, I don’t know when on the death world he’d actually gain ‘dueling predators’ experience, even during the time skips.

Thia was more than a side character, basically the co lead. And as for emasculating, he’s shown to be weaker than half a synth. Both during the flying monster, and the night raid. Her legs took down more synths than his natural arsenal (until the bug bomb). “triumphed in his own way” is not a ringing endorsement.

I never put my opinions out here when reviewing things. Its bad writing. You can like bad things, its okay. And if this was someone’s fan film they made in their back yard and on blender, I’d hope they’d take these criticisms in a good light, and come back with a better story, improving their craft and skill in the process. However, its not a fan film, its a multi million dollar project. Buy better writers, and don’t pay the shitty ones when they churn out shit. This is their job, not a hobby.

He doesn’t adapt on his own. Everything he took from his environment was because Thia told him what to do (except for the bug bombs.) Him rushing in is the problem. When have predators ever just rushed in. And because he’s the runt, he shouldn’t be arrogant, because he never was in a position of power to get like that.

He didn’t take down the entire synth base. He got a few lone synths, struggled with a pair in a building, and I mean really struggled. They kept cutting back to that same fight while Bud and Thia’s legs were racking up kills.

Bud is clan. If Bud was pet, he wouldn’t have left him behind in the first place. He could rationalize robot as tool, but not small creature as pet. He even spat on Bud at the end, just like Bud did to him.

Not one thought to throw an ice grenade down its particularly massive mouth? And I’m not convinced it needs to be inside. An ice grenade from quite the distance to freeze all the ground between NotThia and the Kalisk froze the Kalisk. A plasma shot would have shattered her then and there.

the saddest part is you placing so much attention to movie tropes and quick cuts and personifying them like they should actually mean something to anyone. They all had screen time. Your rant should have been done with that simple explanation instead you went autism. You spend way too much time on this forum. Thats me pretending to be a parent scolding a child yet it comes down to that.

Have not seen the movie yet. Saw some clips and it looks pretty interesting.

We finally get some lore about Yautja culture, basically Spartan-like culture. It might be iffy, but it’s more than we had, ever. It has some potential to build on.

The plot about making friends and overcoming adversity is ok-ish, but goes against everything we know about preds. Although Dek defeats Kalisk, he doesn’t do it alone, which I could still see Yautja elders frowning upon. Yes, Predators and AVP have team hunts, for Dek this is an initiation so i think it would have to be solo.

Starting his own clan is interesting, but may be pointless if he’s not accepted by Yautja society, cause where will he get resources for interstellar travel (refueling), although Thia might help solve that. Adventures of Dek, as the trio hunts, sounds campy.

Overall, it gets you thinking about possibilities, which is a big positive.

What i can’t get over is the donut escape pod. such lousy looking design.
This is what happens when cgi becomes so easy to do on a small budget and everything still looks expensive. Everything looks like it was created by a designer who worked on an 80s animation show only to find themselves in the future making 80s animated show designs on a 2025 film.

This. And WTF @P-willie2000 I cannot believe my eyes!! You’re still here brother?? You still streaming?? Damn, I miss the good ole boys :)

Finally saw Badlands. A solid action movie with some family drama. Action was good. Visuals were good. Interesting planet. But, with all the humor (even though I smirked a few times), its kinda hard to take it seriously. It used to be that humor was only on screen when pred was off screen; when pred was on screen it was time for terror.

This is very different movie from all the others. Although Dek is likable, a hero type role doesnt fit Yautja, but seemingly thats what it takes to open up the culture. Double edged sword at this point.

Judging from the box office, Preds are moving further into a niche market. Even though it’s set up for a sequel, it’s hard to say that it earned its keep.

Uh…maybe if you’re under 18. Dek is a premature birth Yautja, and should have been yeeted off of a mountain lol Yautja’s appeared to be evolving in reverse lmao

This is not a Predator movie, it is a Disney movie.

True. He’s not a typical predator character.

I wonder if he’s going to start a change in Yautja culture. Its good to have feelings, it’s good to have friends, instead of getting a pref dog ill get a xeno pet

If you don’t like badlands, then you shouldn’t like AVP. So cheesy how he made a spear and shield for the human. It’s something out of an 8 yr old’s story for an english project.

HAHAHA XD

Its meant to be that way for the purpose of reach.
I don’t mind it. The reach of the 1st film to the 2nd to the 3rd it started to become ’ the one stop shop ’ for things that everyone wanted it to be that is the horror/gore/sci-fi/ idea.

So no doubt…the franchise needed to start banking on being what every one wants it to be at least for the short period of time that games are being created. And they will eventually make back the debt of what PHG cost but it will take a few more far reaching films before that happens.

it needs further reach. And so it does. Hopefully more games will come of this but who knows what the most successful predator title will be…AVP? goddamn…

Nobody who is hard core is going to like whats going on right now, but fuck…the reach to the market for PRedator as a Disney franchise makes more sense if the franchise is going to succeed in having a future.
Otherwise a softmore attempt at a low cost - low budget niche film is just going to replicate Predators 2010 all over again and only single men will be watchign…yet again. Making the business strategy for the next product an issue.

True. I suppose we won’t see a gory, dark pred film any time soon. Only blood on screen will be green and maybe white.

one of the many many things wrong with badlands

AVP at least had a few actually good scenes. Not much, but considering its competition among predator movies, its a low bar to cross.
